In a large group of stocks, 57% earn a return above the risk free rate, 71% are included in the S&P 500, and 32% both earn a return above the risk free rate and are included in the S&P 500.
a) What is the probability a stock is neither included in the S&P 500 nor earns a return above the risk free rate?
P(R) = .57
P(S) = .71
P(R ‘and’ S) = .32
*Do I just use the Complement Rule and then the Union Rule since I see the words “neither” and “nor”? So my work will go like this:
P(R^c) = 1 – P(R) –> 1 – .57 = .43
P(S^c) = 1 – P(S) –> 1 – .71 = .29
Now Union Rule:
So P(R U S) = P(R) + P(S) – P(R ‘and’ S) –> .43 + .29 – .32 = .4
b) Are the events of a stock being included in the S&P 500 and earning a return above the risk free independent?
*Do I just multiply P(R) x P(S) and check if the product matches P(R ‘and S)? So .57 x .71 = .4047… .4047 does not equal .32 so they are not independent.
